Your assumptions about what is going on depending on the settings seem
to be correct.

In your original e-mail you asked whether it was possible to "limit
the different objects that a client requests". What exactly did you
mean by that and/or in what way do the available knobs not work for
you? If I know exactly what you want, I may be able to propose a
solution...
